Formation

Basalt is a class of igneous rock created from magma(liquid volcanic matter), that reaches the earth’s surface as lava. Due to its proximity to the surface, basalt cools fast resulting in a stone that is much more porous than granite, giving it a matte finish and making it vulnerable to acidic products and liquids.

Basalt is generally black, grey or charcoal. Characteristics include pin holes, veins, groups of holes, (often referred to as “cat’s paws”), sometimes brown shading due to oxidisation or iron content, and in some cases white calcium inclusions.
