Maintenance

Help make your beautiful stonework last a lifetime!

Now you have luxury new stonework in your home or business, whether it’s on the floor, walls, stairs, or worktop, you’ll want to make sure that it stays in the best condition for as long as possible.Below are key ways to look after different types of stone to prolong its life:

External Stone Floors with non-slip finishes:

  • Sealing – Upon installation, we recommend that your stone floor is sealed with ‘Stain Proof’ by ‘Dry Treat’. This product is guaranteed to last for 15 years when applied by a certified application contractor. However, it will help to minimise efflorescence, which is where salts and impurities crystallise and come to the surface.
  • Washing and cleaning – Wash your flooring using a high pressure water source as often as required. On occasion, it may be necessary to ‘scrub wash’ your flooring manually using a standard scrubbing brush or a commercial scrub. If you use a cleaning agent, we recommend ‘Johnsons View Quick’ which is a non-rinse product which helps to remove dirt and grime. For more difficult marks, we recommend ‘Tempo Heavy Duty Cleaner’.

Polished Marble Walls and Floors:

  • Sealing – For marble walls, on completion of the installation, we recommend that it is sealed with ‘Stain Proof’ by ‘Dry Treat’. For marble floors, apply a wax based surface sealer, which provides an ongoing protection. Wax should be reapplied every 6 to 12 months.
  • Washing and cleaning – To clean, simply use warm water with a dash of methylated spirits, to help minimise streaking. Do not use Ajax, Jiff or other aggressive cleaning products. Instead, you could use ‘Johnsons View Quick non rinse cleaner’. For more difficult marks, we recommend ‘Tempo Heavy Duty Cleaner’.

Honed marble, travertine and limestone bench tops and floors:

  • Sealing – All honed marble, travertine and limestone tops installed by Bernini Stone and Tiles have been sealed with ‘Lifhofin Stain Stop’ which is a penetrating sealer. Tops should be re-sealed every 6 to 12 months. For honed marble, travertine and limestone flooring, after installation, we recommend it is sealed with ‘Stain Proof’ by ‘Dry Treat’.
  • Washing and cleaning – To clean, use the same approach as for polished marble, making sure to use a neutral product such as ‘Johnsons View Quick non rinse cleaner’ rather than Ajax or Jiff.

Honed Basalt:

  • Sealing – Upon installation, we recommend that your honed basalt is sealed with ‘Stain Proof’ by ‘Dry Treat’. This product is guaranteed to last for 15 years when applied by a certified application contractor.
  • Washing and cleaning – Wash with warm to hot water, with a dash of methylated spirits. This will help to eliminate any wash marks. If necessary, use a mild detergent such as dish-washing liquid or shampoo. From time-to-time, it may be necessary to ‘scrub wash’. To do this, use either a white nylon pad or a commercial cleaning machine. The areas you have scrub washed may be visible, so you may need to scrub clean the entire floor. For removal of difficult marks, we recommend using ‘Tempo Heavy Duty Cleaner’.
